Description

Category : EU Food & Drink | Sub-Category : EU Food Security | Programme : Special Feature Week

Andries Piebalgs, Commissioner for Development

Duration 4'35''

Commissioner for Development about Food Security issues

On the occasion of European and Social Committee Conference on Food Security we interview Andries Piegalgs. He gives his opinion on:

  • Reforms in Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
  • Price volatility
  • Food scarcity
  • Development aid for small holders in developing countries
  • Balance between subsistence crops and cash crops

Food scarcity touches war-torn regions under political instability such as Africa. According to Mr Piebalgs mentioned regions are supported by European Union because food there should be a right of everyone and not only privilege of individuals. Since agriculture in those regions is based on small farms, that problem needs to be taken care of.

Andries Piebalgs: “I believe that we should design clever programmes targeting particularly smallholder farmers which are the backbone of African and developing countries agriculture.”
