Commissioner for Development about Food Security issues
On the occasion of European and Social Committee Conference on Food Security we interview Andries Piegalgs. He gives his opinion on:
- Reforms in Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
- Price volatility
- Food scarcity
- Development aid for small holders in developing countries
- Balance between subsistence crops and cash crops
Food scarcity touches war-torn regions under political instability such as Africa. According to Mr Piebalgs mentioned regions are supported by European Union because food there should be a right of everyone and not only privilege of individuals. Since agriculture in those regions is based on small farms, that problem needs to be taken care of.
Andries Piebalgs: “I believe that we should design clever programmes targeting particularly smallholder farmers which are the backbone of African and developing countries agriculture.”
