Greens Group comments on GMO and Food labeling proposals
Greens spokesperson looks at the week ahead and gives his opinion on:
- Genetically Modified Organisms
- LePage report
- Food labeling
- Multiannual Financial Framework till 2020
- Transaction tax
- Schengen
Helmut Weixler on Food labeling: “[The proposal] will be adopted by large majority because it is a real improvement for European consumer (…) What was not possible was to have also labeling of alcoholic beverages (…) There alcohol lobby had a victory”
If the proposal about food labeling is carried by vote, it will be compulsory for the producers to put the full product content on their labels. Greens wanted to have this information on the front of the packaging but finally it was not included in the proposal.
The other current topic is GMOs. There is a pressure from United States which is insisting on exporting its GMO seeds to EU. A debate continues if it should be up to each Member States to ban genetic modification or not. This idea is contradictory to the plan to have a common EU regulation on the topic but Greens considers the proposal as “an improvement in how to regulate GMOs” even if not solving all the problems.
- Every Monday morning, www.viEUws.eu will bring you the interviEUw of a Spokesperson from a political group.
