Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, met with technology journalist Jennifer Baker to discuss connected TV, SOPA, IPR and Cloud Computing.

Kroes declares that connected TV will be second revolution in the field of television, as it will connect TV sets to everything and everyone. However, the copyright dimension to this novelty needs to be faced first. Therefore, Commissioner Barnier for Internal Market and Services is already looking into the intellectual property rights (IPR) side of the story. The main objective is coming up with decent remunerations for artists involved.

In light of the recent Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) protests around the globe, the Commissioner believes that a good and water-tight system is necessary to tackle the copyright issue. However, it should be taken into account that the internet, by definition, is an open internet.

Finally, Kroes elaborates on cloud computing. She believes that, what she calls a “bookshelf up in the air”, provides opportunities for everybody, ranging from SMEs to individual consumers. But again copyright enforcement should be associated with these developments. The Commissioner believes that the actual business models are up to the industries themselves, but that governments have to shape the right climate to bring innovation and IPR together.
