Interview with Jos Dings, Director Transport & Environment (T&E) on Biofuels/ ILUC (indirect land use change)

Debate over indirect land-use change, ILUC, is raging in Brussels – it is the displacement of one land use by another as a result of biofuels being grown somewhere else.

In practice it’s often the displacement of tropical forest by food production, because the land used to grow food crops is used for energy crops instead. The result is the unintended release of greenhouse gas emissions as large natural carbon sinks are destroyed.

Beset by conflicting ILUC reports, European policymakers have repeatedly delayed a decision on how to tackle it. They are now set to issue proposals in November. How the EU chooses to account for ILUC will determine not just the climate benefits of biofuels, but the very future of this industry in Europe.
