SPECIAL GREEN WEEK
An environmentalist’s views on EU biodiversity policy.
Biodiversity is the EU’s top environmental priority this year alongside climate change. But despite all the rhetoric and pledges to give it political priority, decisive action has yet to materialise says Andreas Baumüller from WWF.
viEUws spoke to Mr Baumüller, Chair of European Habitats Forum and Senior Policy Officer for biodiversity at WWF, about why we continue to lose species and habitats at an unprecedented rate and what is needed for this to change. There is an economic case for biodiversity protection, Mr Baumüller says. If we don’t act, the costs of biodiversity loss will be €1.1 trillion per year by 2050, or five times the Greek deficit.
