European Commission's new thinking on genetically modified crops.

InterviEUw with José Bové, French MEP, Greens.

New EU food safety commissioner tries to break years of deadlock and stalemate among EU countries over authorisations for growing biotech crops. In an attempt to permit more GM crops in Europe, his idea is to allow countries to make the political choice as to whether they want to ban growing of a crop that has already been approved at EU-level. One perceived danger of this idea is that while more GM crops would be permitted in Europe, the continent would see a patchwork of national biotech bans - potentially a legal mess and perhaps leaving countries open to a WTO challenge.
