What are the challenges facing the new competition commissioner as Europe struggles to recover from the economic crisis ?
Video debate hosted by Robert McLeod (MLex), with Peter Skinner (MEP) and Jacques Lafitte (AVISA).
After five years directing Europe’s single currency, including the last two years fighting to hold the fiscal line during the worst financial crisis in living memory, Joaquin Almunia has taken up the reins as European antitrust chief.
Commissioner Almunia faces another daunting task. Illegal cartels, protectionist mergers and government sponsored bailouts of favoured industries upsetting the competitive balance of the single market will all be laid at his door.
Robert McLeod from MLex welcomes two eminent practitioners in Brussels to throw some light on what is in store for Almunia and ask What sort of commissioner will he be?
Peter Skinner MEP has been a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee for some 15 years and is the European Parliamentary Labour Party spokesperson on financial and economic affairs. As such, he has witnessed Commissioner Almunia’s performance in his previous post at first hand.
Jacques Lafitte, founder of strategic advisors Avisa Partners and in charge of its competition practice. Jacques has more than two decades of government and private sector expertise. From 1995 to 1999, he was the member of cabinet in charge of the euro in the cabinet of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner. Jacques will be able to draw on these different perspectives to assess the challenges facing the commissioner.
