EU Data Protection Regulation: MEPs back fines up to €100m for rule-breaking companies

European Parliament spokesperson Marjory Van Den Broeke joins Jennifer Baker to discuss data protection law following a parliamentary vote.

Current regulations – approved by Parliament over a year ago – focus on consumers and harmonising data protection rules across the EU. Following revelations of NSA snooping, MEPs want member states to have more say over who can access their citizens’ data, and have backed fines of up to 5 % of the revenue of rule-breaking companies.
