Leading tech journalist Jennifer Baker is joined by Pastora Valero, head of Government Affairs for the EMEAR (Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia) region at Cisco, to discuss the European Commission’s recent proposals to make the Digital Single Market reality.
Cisco supports European Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip’s 16 point plan. It represents a real step forward by removing barriers and allows the EU to take the lead in the digital world, according to Valero. She sees it as an opportunity to get rid of obsolete legislation, while at the same time directing investments into infrastructure, such as increasing high-speed broadband penetration in Europe. However, Valero warns against regulation that could disadvantage successful companies and suffocate the market. She considers that the EU should deal with possible abuse of dominant position through its competition rules.
