Syrian conflict will drag on, argues the ALDE Group

Jennifer Baker is joined by Neil Corlett, spokesperson for the ALDE Group, to discuss the Syrian conflict and the European Union’s place in its resolve.

Mr Corlett shares that there is a real danger that the international community may lose focus in trying to deal with chemical weapons when there is a wider ongoing conflict. He adds that leaving Bashar al-Assad hand over 100 tons of chemicals for the period of 9-12 months means that his place in power is also guaranteed for that period.

The spokesperson states that “it is clear that at the end the EU didn’t count and it was just a superpower brokering exercise”, however, he adds that “the EU could and should be doing much more” in the area of humanitarian aid.
