EU-Japan Summit: ‘commitment Japanese PM needed to unblock trade negotiations’

November 19, 2013 - Foreign Affairs & Trade

Lénaïc Vaudin d’Imécourt is joined by Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, spokeswoman of the European Commission, to give insight into the EU-Japan Summit on Tuesday November 19th.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will meet Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan on November 19th in Tokyo to discuss the ongoing trade negotiations between the EU and Japan. Despite being important trade partners, the negotiations have been stumbling in some areas as non-tariff barriers and procurement. The European Commission will, therefore, seek “the commitment by the Japanese prime minister to help unblocking the issues which are preventing progress”, says EC spokeswomen Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen.
