Jennifer Baker is joined by Richard More O’Ferrall, spokesperson for the Greens Group, to discuss how the European Parliament should respond to the LuxLeaks tax avoidance scandal.
More O’Ferrall underlines that none of the institutions have reacted to the LuxLeaks scandal yet, the Member States are not willing to examine tax evasion either. It is therefore important that the European Parliament takes action. The Greens Group proposes to set up a parliamentary committee of inquiry to investigate tax avoidance practices in the European Union, by assessing ‘tax rulings’ issued by the Member States and their compatibility with EU law. The committee would need support from 25% of MEPs in order to be set up.
