“Blue Economy” innovation: EU to draw economic benefits from oceans, explains European Commission

The Blue Economy” innovation plan aims at drawing economic benefits from the use of ocean resources and by improving the knowledge about it. “In the future we will have to rely more and more on the oceans as a source for food, medicine and energy”, stresses Ahrenkilde Hansen. The spokeswoman of the European Commission says that currently around 5 million people work in the in the European Union maritime sector. “If we use the potential of the oceans this number could grow to up to 7 million by the year 2020“, adds Ahrenkilde Hansen.
