Pre-EU Summit Insights: don’t expect decisions, but the “start of a new political cycle”

EPC’s leading European politics expert Janis A. Emmanouilidis gives Lénaïc Vaudin d’Imécourt an exclusive pre-summit analysis of the European Council meeting  for the first time chaired by Donald Tusk, the new President of the European Council – taking place on 18 and 19 December in Brussels.

Topics on the agenda include:

Juncker’s €315 billion package: no big discussions expected as the investment fund “is already being put on track“. However, everybody’s eyes will be on “how much money Member States individually will be ready to put into the pot”
– Tackling tax evasion: “Political pressure on the Member States needed” to make progress in fight against tax avoidance
Situation in Ukraine: heads of state will underline that they are committed to “defending their position vis-a-vis Russia” and that they want “Ukraine to go forward with reforms”

Further issues on the agenda: Energy Union, Digital Single Market & report on better economic governance.

The next European Council will be held in Brussels on 12 and 13 February 2015.
