UN climate talks in Lima: Europe risks “being left behind” if higher climate ambition is not set before Paris
Jennifer Baker is joined by Richard More O’Ferrall, spokesperson for the Greens Group, to talk about the European Union’s ambitions for the 12-day UN Climate Change Conference in Lima. The conference is expected to lay the foundation for the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
According to More O’Ferrall, for a number of years the EU has been hiding behind the claim that other countries are not raising their climate change ambitions, and Europe therefore does not need to step up its efforts to fight global warming either. Europe cannot follow this approach any more, claims the spokesperson for the Greens Group, as some emerging economies have already introduced rather ambitious climate change targets. Moreover, the United States and China reached a deal to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions just before the UN climate talks in Lima.
