Mega-trucks would put road safety at stake and increase pollution, argues Greens Group

Jennifer Baker is joined by Richard More O’Ferrall, spokesperson for the Greens Group, to discuss the proposal for new EU legislation on mega-trucks or gigaliners.

Richard More O’Ferrall argues that the authorisation of the heavier and longer trucks in the EU would lead to major road accidents, because European road infrastructure is not well adapted to meet super long vehicles. He notes that besides road safety issues, gigaliners would also raise noise and pollution problems. Therefore, the spokesperson for the Greens Group hopes that the green light for mega-trucks will not be given. The European Commission proposal to increase vehicle weight and size, with a view on allowing the cross-border passage of gigaliners or mega trucks, was voted in the European Parliament on Tuesday 11 February.
