Environment damaging tar sands oil should be kept out of Europe, claims Greens Group

Jennifer Baker is joined by Richard More O’Ferrall, spokesperson for the Greens Group, to discuss whether the European Union should open its doors for tar sands oil imports.

More O’Ferrall argues that the extraction of tar sands oil generates much more greenhouse gas emissions than the production of conventional crude oil. For this reason, tar sands oil should be labelled as highly polluting, stresses the Greens spokesperson. However, the European Commission has proposed to scrap this requirement that would prevent Canada, one of the biggest tar sands exporters, from entering the EU market.

On 3 December, the Environment Committee of the European Parliament will vote on the fuel quality directive implementing measure and decide whether tar sands oil should be allowed.
