Commission does not foresee waste prevention targets, assures Director-General for Environment
Karl Falkenberg, Director-General for Environment at the European Commission meets with leading environment journalist Sonja van Renssen to discuss waste prevention plans.
In this interview Falkenberg states that the Commission does not foresee any waste prevention targets at European Union level for the moment. Waste problems will be tacked at the national level through country-specific waste management plans. The Director-General for Environment argues that even without regulatory targets a lot can be done to reduce landfill. For instance, private business should be motivated to reduce its waste simply because this cuts bills. Moreover, Karl Falkenberg underlines the importance of stopping food waste across the entire food value chain in Europe, especially in the distribution system and at the end-consumer level.
