Ban on Neonicotinoid Insecticides To Save Bees, discussed by the Greens Group

April 30, 2013 - Environment | Food & Agriculture

Jennifer Baker is joined by Helmut Weixler, Spokesperson for the Greens Group, to discuss the ban on neonicotinoid insecticides in relation to bee populations.

Last Monday, 29th April, a vote by the Member States left the decision in the hands of the European Commission. After 15 votes in favour of the ban, eight against and four abstentions, the EC decided to ban the use of neonicotinoid pesticides for two years from December 2013.

In January, a report by the European Food Safety Authority concluded that neonicotinoids – used to treat seeds before they are planted – could be responsible for a decline in bee populations.
