Leading environment journalist, Sonja van Renssen, is joined by Hans van Steen, Head of Unit for Renewables and CCS at DG Energy at the European Commission, to discuss renewables support schemes.
The European Commission recently released a Green Paper setting out ideas for a Climate Energy Package for 2030. Renewables are a main concern and the EC has already pointed out the need for a dedicated instrument to promote them. A binding target post-2020 is an issue to be discussed in the near future, while a quota scheme might also be an option.
According to Hans van Steen, the guidance the EC is working on for renewables support schemes aims to make this support more market compatible, moving away from fixed tariffs to tariffs that float with the cost of renewables.
“The best assigned support schemes today have very regular adjustments.”
