Data Protection – Christian Engström, Pirate Party MEP

April 9, 2013 - Citizens & Consumers | ICT

Leading ICT journalist, Jennifer Baker, met Christian Engström, Pirate Party MEP, to discuss Data Protection.

A common regulation to cover all of Europe is one of the arguments presented by Engström, as he believes it an advantage for businesses. There has been a huge lobbying and pressure from American companies and authorities regarding this topic and Engström wishes they could understand these proposals are an advantage.

Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, recently traveled to the US where she held talks with the US Attorney General Eric Holder on the draft umbrella EU-US agreement regarding data protection principles for data-sharing between law enforcement agencies.

“It makes it easier for the European businesses to do a cross-boarder business but it also means we can put pressure on the Americans.”
