Children and the Internet – Robert Madelin, DG CONNECT

February 14, 2013 - Citizens & Consumers | ICT

In context of the European Commission’s recently released Cyber Security Strategy, the question of how to make the internet a safer place for children is being discussed. In particular, the pros and cons of a voluntary, industry-led approach compared to binding legislation. Leading ICT journalist, Jennifer Baker, met Robert Madelin, Director-General of the European Commission’s DG CONNECT, to talk about the current state of play and child safety online.

“My perception is: companies can do better, and how do you get companies to do better? You make a rule which says: this is your duty.”

Interview conducted in light of the Citizen’s Controversy event, “Children and the Internet: What Trade-off Between Freedom and Safety” organized by the Madariaga-College of Europe Foundation on 31 January.
