Rose O’Donovan and Ed Bray, editors of Agra Facts / Agra Focus, discuss the future of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in this latest issue of ‘Brussels Briefing’.

As EU Agriculture Ministers discuss the Commission’s post-2013 CAP proposals in finer detail, member states are starting to forge alliances and voice their opposition to certain elements of the plans. Bureaucracy and environmental requirements (00:59) have come under the microscope.

While some countries want to cut the CAP’s budget, others stand by a strong CAP, whereas newer Member States such as the Baltics are seeking a fairer share (01:49). Meanwhile, MEPs in the European Parliament are taking up their responsibilities as co-legislators (02:57) for the first time. Their loyalties will only become clear as Parliament finalises its report in the coming months.
